GWRP Spring 2025 Participants

The participants of the 2025 Grant Writing Residency Program.

The Center for Social Science Innovation (CSSI) has recently accepted four participants for its Spring 2025 Grant Writing Residency Program (GWRP).

GWRP offers support and services to researchers preparing to submit a grant proposal.

Selected participants collaborate with CSSI’s grant development staff to create competitive and refined grant proposals. Participants are also provided with quiet, dedicated office workspaces and funding to assist their grant production.

Finally, the researchers can engage with other participants and CSSI staff in regular meetings, workshops, and networking events, cultivating a supportive and collaborative learning community.

“I am looking forward to collaborating with these researchers and having our team help them develop strong, competitive proposals,” says Mark Berg, CSSI director. “Each researcher is addressing crucial social science concerns in their work, and I am excited that our resources here at CSSI will help them achieve their goals.”

The Spring 2025 GWRP cohort includes four faculty members from three colleges at the University of Iowa.

Iulian Vamanu, associate professor in the School of Library and Information Science in the Graduate College, is crafting a grant proposal for a project that will explore how public libraries can foster community resilience through social services, job training, and public health information. After identifying the most effective resilience-building resources, Vamanu then plans to train library staff on how to implement them. He is seeking funding from the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program.

Aislinn Conrad, associate professor in the School of Social Work in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS), is creating a grant proposal for a project that will engineer an AI-driven camera to detect and identify different forms of child abuse. Conrad aims to submit her proposal to the National Science Foundation.

Cara Hamann, associate professor in the Department of Epidemiology in the College of Public Health, is writing a proposal for a project that will transform an adolescent bicycling safety educational program into an evidence-based toolkit that others can use to improve bike safety. Hamann is pursuing a grant from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, a branch of the National Institutes of Health.

Ethan Kutlu, assistant professor in the Department of Linguistics and the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences in CLAS, is developing a grant proposal for a project that examines how bilingualism impacts the development of children’s math skills. Kutlu plans to submit his proposal to the National Institutes of Health.
