Note: In September 2024, the Center for Social Science Innovation replaced the Public Policy Center and its subsidiary unit the Iowa Social Science Research Center.
Julianna Pacheco, professor in the Department of Political Science and research fellow in the Public Policy Center, has been named a 2024 Andrew Carnegie Fellow by the Carnegie Corp. of New York. This prestigious fellowship provides each recipient up to $200,000 for research on political polarization in the United States. Pacheco’s project, “The Deadly Effects of Partisanship,” will provide a clearer understanding of how physicians are both the cause and the potential solution to the political polarization of health.
Pacheco worked with the Public Policy Center’s grant development team to submit her proposal for the fellowship – one of 28 selected from a pool of more than 360 applications. Kris Ackerson, grant development manager, coordinated the application with the university president’s office, developed the project budget, and ensured the application complied with the sponsor’s requirements. “I couldn’t be happier for Julie,” Ackerson said. “She is a joy to work with. Our team looks forward to continuing providing her support on this project.”
Pacheco plans to use a portion of her research funds to work with our research support team to conduct a survey of physicians. Lisa Halm-Werner, project manager, will work with Pacheco to develop the survey instrument as well as collect the survey data.
“The best part about working with Kris and Lisa is the excitement and support that they showed for my project,” Pacheco said. “Both were thrilled and congratulatory when I received the award. When you work with a team, you want others to share in your interest and passion. Kris and Lisa did just that.”
