A recent survey found that most Americans believe social science research helps policymakers and community leaders make informed decisions and that investing in this research improves quality of life in the United States.
The findings come from a national survey launched by Verasight as part of its 2026 client omnibus survey. The University of Iowa Center for Social Science Innovation (CSSI) currently maintains a subscription with Verasight, allowing UI faculty, staff, and student researchers to conduct high-impact survey research at a reduced cost.
Verasight collected data between March 6–16, 2026, surveying 1,000 U.S. adult residents on a range of topics, including technology, politics, and civic life. Two questions, submitted by CSSI, focused on perceptions of social science research.
Importance of social science research for informing leaders
- Eighty-nine percent of respondents said social science research (such as studies on education, social causes of health, crime, economy, and community well-being) is important for helping policymakers and community leaders make informed decisions.
- Perceived importance was higher among women, younger adults (ages 18–29), and individuals with some college education.
- Importance was highest among Democrats (95%), followed by Independents (89%) and Republicans (83%).
Investing in social science research to improve U.S. quality of life
- Sixty-eight percent of respondents agreed that investing in social science research helps improve quality of life for people in the United States.
- Agreement was higher among women, younger adults (ages 18–29), and individuals with some college education.
- Agreement was highest among Democrats (86%), followed by Independents (68%) and Republicans (49%).
“The survey findings indicate strong public recognition of the value of social science research,” said Mark Berg, director of CSSI. “They reinforce our mission to elevate social scientists and cultivate interdisciplinary innovation.”
